Luleå Energi AB

Resource-Efficient System with Energy Recovery at Multiple Levels

Rodoverken, in good collaboration with Granitor Systems and Granitor Mechanical, has built a hot water accumulator in Luleå. The tank is 40 meters high, with an inner diameter of 32 meters. Most of the energy in Luleå’s district heating system is based on residual heat from industry, creating a resource-efficient system with energy recovery at multiple levels. The accumulator serves as a large energy storage facility and contributes to the energy transition and an even better district heating system in Luleå.

Challenges of Projects in Northern Sweden

Located in northern Sweden, the project faced several challenges along the way. The site team spent considerable time removing snow. During the insulation phase, strong winds also posed a challenge. Despite these difficulties, the schedule for the tank construction was maintained. The client chose to delay the timeline because the commissioning of the accumulator involves pressurizing the district heating network. To avoid risking a reduction in heat supply to customers, the commissioning was postponed until after winter.

Good Collaboration with the Client

On-site work began in November 2020 under project manager Dennis Johansson. In the summer of 2021, consultant Pontus Steinvall took over, and the project was completed in the summer of 2022. Rodoverken’s own staff completed their work in the fall of 2021.

The client is now one step closer to achieving its goal of having all primary energy be fossil-free by 2030. The outcome is a strong collaboration and a satisfied client.
