Efficient and Sustainable District Heating Delivery
In Västerås, Rodoverken has built an accumulator tank that both ensures the city’s district heating supply and contributes to a sustainable energy system. With a shell height of 75 meters and the capacity to store 26 million liters of water, the tank is both a technical milestone and a visual landmark for the city. The so-called ‘giant thermos’ is designed to smooth out district heating production and handle peak loads during cold periods – a crucial investment for the city’s long-term energy supply.
By efficiently storing thermal energy, the tank reduces dependence on fossil fuels and thus contributes to the goal of completely phasing out coal and oil in the city. At the same time, it increases operational reliability, ensuring a stable district heating supply for Västerås residents.
The new accumulator tank, which is one of the tallest in Europe, is not only a technical solution, but also an architectural symbol of the city. The modern design includes a decorative stainless steel band at the top, as well as a six-meter high crown with an expanded metal roof that can be illuminated in different colors. The tank combines function with aesthetics and has become an integral part of the Västerås cityscape.
